We pass the dark towers of what is left of the “Ludendorff” rail road bridge, cross the Rhine, better known as the bridge of Remagen, site of the most spectacular US Military action on German soil in WWII: storming and conquering the last intact bridge, on March 7, 1945. Crossing into the volcanic Eifel country we find, next to an old crater lake, the abbey of Maria Laach, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture dating back to 1093 A.D. Leaving the Eifel country we drive to the Moselle river valley. Here, hidden in the woods, is one of Germany’s most picturesque old castle, Burg Eltz., built beween the 12th and 16th centuries, it has survived with very few alternations At the end of the day we will have a good meal and a glass of Moselle wine at or near the town of Cochem with its majestic rebuilt castle, the Reichsburg, high above the river. |
